In NieR: Automata, some upgrade materials are more elusive than others. While many can be obtained by defeating enemies, certain items like Filler Metal are found through random drops in the overworld. The randomness of these drops adds an element of chance to your farming efforts.
Filler Metal is an essential upgrade material that you'll need to locate in the overworld early in the game, though be prepared for a lengthy search. Later in the game, you can purchase Filler Metal, albeit at a high price, which might be the more convenient option if you have the funds.
Filler Metal is a rare drop found in item spawn locations within the Factory. The exact spot changes each time you explore, and Filler Metal has the lowest spawn rate among other items you might encounter. After progressing through the main story and revisiting the Factory, you can unlock the Factory: Hanger access point. This serves as an ideal starting point for your search, as it's located deep within the Factory.
You may need to unlock the Factory: Hanger access point again depending on your progress in the story.
While speed boosts can help streamline your farming efforts, Filler Metal remains challenging to farm consistently. Your best strategy is to thoroughly explore the Factory, collecting all naturally spawned items you come across. However, the most reliable way to acquire Filler Metal in significant quantities is through purchasing it.
The only vendor selling Filler Metal is the Shopkeeper Machine at the Amusement Park, but this option becomes available only after achieving one of the final endings, which requires completing all three playthroughs of the game. Once you've beaten the game, you can use Chapter Select to revisit the Shopkeeper, where Filler Metal will be available for 11,250 G each.
Although the price is steep, buying Filler Metal is a more dependable method than repeatedly exploring the Factory. The Pod upgrades requiring Filler Metal are crucial for progressing through the game, especially as you face increasingly powerful enemies.
