Netflix has officially announced the closure of its interactive fiction games under the Netflix Stories banner, marking the end of a brief yet intriguing venture into narrative gaming. This decision might come as a surprise to many, especially considering the solid player base these games had garnered. So, what led to the cancellation of Netflix Stories? Let's dive into the details!
The news, initially reported by Variety, is part of a larger strategic pivot at Netflix Games. The company is now shifting its focus toward mobile titles that encompass party games, children's games, mainstream releases, and more interactive experiences designed for TV play.
Despite this change, Boss Fight Entertainment, the studio behind the Netflix Stories series, will continue to collaborate with Netflix on other projects, including the much-anticipated Squid Game: Unleashed.
Despite facing some criticism, Netflix Stories consistently held a strong position among the top-played titles in the Netflix Games catalog. Recent data shows it secured the fourth spot in the Netflix Games top 10 carousel, which ranks games based on playtime rather than downloads.
As for the future of the series, the final interactive title, Love Is Blind: NYC, is set to be the last in the lineup. Once its rollout concludes, no further Netflix Stories games will be developed. This announcement follows shortly after the Netflix Stories app began teasing its upcoming game, The Love Contract, slated for release on April 8th. Unlike its predecessors, The Love Contract was not based on any existing Netflix IP but was an original romance story about an actress navigating a love triangle between a Hollywood star and a billionaire, entangled in fame, scandal, and fake dating. Regrettably, this project has now been canceled.
While no new games will be developed, the existing titles in the Netflix Stories collection will remain available for play. Fans can still enjoy games such as Love Is Blind, Emily in Paris, Money Heist, Love Is Blind: Winter’s Kiss, Perfect Match, Sex Education, Selling Sunset, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, and The Perfect Couple. However, planned sequels for Outer Banks and Ginny & Georgia have been scrapped.
That's the full story on Netflix Stories! If you're a fan of Netflix shows and haven't tried these games yet, you can still check them out on the Google Play Store.
