MultiVersus, the popular free-to-play fighting game, is set to close its doors after its fifth and final season. This article delves into what fans can expect from MultiVersus Season 5 and what lies ahead once the game shuts down.
The official MultiVersus Twitter (X) account broke the news on January 31, 2025, that the game will cease operations on May 30, 2025, following the conclusion of its fifth season. In an official blog post, developers Player First Games and Warner Bros. confirmed that "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."
MultiVersus Season 5 kicks off on February 4, 2025, and runs until May 30, 2025. This season introduces two new playable characters: DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny. The blog post assures players that "All new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay." Once Season 5 concludes, MultiVersus will no longer be available for download on platforms like the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.
No official reason for the shutdown has been provided by MultiVersus.
Post-Season 5, MultiVersus will transition to an offline mode, allowing players to continue their gaming experience "via the local gameplay mode, either solo against A.I. opponents or with up to three friends." To access this mode, players need to download the latest version of MultiVersus during Season 5, from February 4 at 9 AM PST to May 30 at 9 AM PDT.
Upon logging in, the game will generate a local save file linked to your PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account. This file will enable you to enjoy MultiVersus offline, retaining all your earned and purchased content.
As of January 31, 2025, MultiVersus has ceased real money transactions. The premium currency, Gleamium, is no longer purchasable, but players can use any remaining Gleamium to access in-game content until the end of Season 5.
MultiVersus burst onto the scene with its public beta in July 2022, offering a unique take on the fighting game genre with its 2v2 team-based format, drawing comparisons to Super Smash Bros. The beta ran until June 2023, featuring multiple updates and two seasons of content. The game was relaunched in May 2024 with enhancements including new characters, rollback netcode, a new PvE mode, new currencies, and more.
Despite these updates, player dissatisfaction persisted due to technical issues, frequent disconnections, and concerns over microtransactions. By July 2024, MultiVersus reportedly experienced a 70% drop in player counts on PS4 and PS5.
MultiVersus will officially shut down on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, concluding its journey with 35 playable characters from various beloved franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed their gratitude, stating, "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."
MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
