Monster Hunter Wilds is contemplating a 24-hour extension for their Open Beta Test 2 following a significant PlayStation Network outage that disrupted gameplay over the weekend. Dive into the details of this extension and the events that led to it.
Monster Hunter Wilds (MH Wilds) is considering extending their Open Beta Test 2 by one day due to a PlayStation Network outage that lasted 24 hours, starting at 6 PM EST on February 7th. This outage left all online games on the console, including the MH Wilds beta, unplayable. The service was restored around 8 PM EST, as announced by the official NA X (Twitter) support account.
While the exact timing for the extension remains unannounced, it is confirmed to be a 24-hour addition to compensate for the lost playtime. This could extend from the end of Beta Test 2 Part 2 up until February 27th, the day before the game's official release. Part 1 of Beta Test 2 has already concluded, and Part 2 is scheduled to start on February 13th at 7 PM PT. Players can look forward to resuming their adventures and possibly encountering the amusing low-poly bug that transforms detailed characters into blocky, low-resolution figures.
Capcom has clarified that the beta test builds are outdated and do not represent the final game's quality. These builds are prone to bugs, including the notorious low-poly character glitch, where textures fail to load properly, turning characters, Palicos, and monsters into blocky versions of themselves.
Rather than frustration, fans have embraced this glitch, sharing their encounters on social media and even expressing a desire for MH Wilds to celebrate its polygonal beginnings. In an interview with GamesRadar+, the MH Wilds team acknowledged the bug's entertainment value but encouraged players to experience the game's full potential upon its official release later this month.
Monster Hunter Wilds, the latest installment in the acclaimed Monster Hunter series, introduces an open-world setting known as the Forbidden Lands. Players assume the role of the Hunter, tasked with exploring this mysterious region and confronting its apex predator, the White Wraith. The eagerly awaited action-RPG is slated for release on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on February 28th, 2025.
PlayStation attributed the outage to an "operational issue" and issued an apology via their NA X (Twitter) support account. As compensation, active PlayStation Plus members will receive an additional five days of service.
However, the community expressed dissatisfaction with Sony's communication during the outage, recalling the panic and concern reminiscent of the 2011 PSN outage. That incident, caused by a hacker attack, compromised approximately 77 million user accounts and led to a three-and-a-half-week service interruption from April 20th to May 14th. Sony's response at the time included regular updates to users about the situation and the necessary steps to address the breach.
