The gaming world is abuzz with the dramatic shift in player counts between Overwatch 2 and the newly released Marvel Rivals. Here's an in-depth look at how these similar titles have influenced each other's player bases.

Following the launch of Marvel Rivals on December 5th, Overwatch 2 experienced its lowest ever player count on Steam. The numbers plummeted to 17,591 on December 6th and further to 16,919 by December 9th. In stark contrast, Marvel Rivals attracted a staggering 184,633 players on the 6th, which surged to 202,077 by the 9th. The all-time peak player counts also tell a compelling story, with Marvel Rivals reaching 480,990 players, significantly outstripping Overwatch 2's peak of 75,608.
Both games offer free-to-play, team-based PVP shooting experiences with captivating gameplay mechanics, leading to inevitable comparisons. Overwatch 2 has faced a barrage of negative reviews on Steam, coming not only from Marvel Rivals enthusiasts but also from its own player base, resulting in a 'Mixed' review rating. Meanwhile, Marvel Rivals basks in a 'Mostly Positive' rating, despite some critiques regarding balance issues.

It's important to recognize that Steam is just one of many platforms where Overwatch 2 is available. The game also runs on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Blizzard's Battle.net. Many players have migrated to Battle.net, especially since the Steam version was only introduced in 2023, a year after its Early Access debut on Battle.net. Cross-platform play also necessitates a Battle.net account across all platforms.
Adding fresh content, Overwatch 2 kicked off Season 14, introducing a new Scottish tank hero, Hazard, along with a new limited-time mode and the 2024 Winter Wonderland event, perfectly timed for the holiday season.
Both Overwatch 2 and Marvel Rivals can be enjoyed for free on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Additionally, Overwatch 2 extends its reach to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.
