Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update Disables Mods

Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update Cracks Down on Mods

Marvel Rivals' Season 1 update has reportedly disabled custom-made mods, a popular feature among players since the game's launch. While not explicitly announced, the update effectively prevents the use of these modifications, leaving characters in their default appearances.

The January 10, 2025 Season 1 launch introduced significant content, including the Fantastic Four as playable heroes (Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman initially, with the Thing and Human Torch to follow), a new Battle Pass, maps, and a "Doom Match" game mode. However, the simultaneous elimination of mod functionality has drawn considerable player attention.

NetEase Games, the developer, has consistently maintained that mod usage violates the game's terms of service, even for purely cosmetic changes, and previously issued bans for offenders. The Season 1 update appears to have preemptively addressed this through hash checking, a technique verifying data authenticity.

This move, while not entirely surprising given NetEase's stated policy and past actions (including banning a controversial Donald Trump mod), has disappointed many players who enjoyed customizing their in-game experience. Some mod creators have even shared their unreleased work online, highlighting the impact of this change.

While some mods contained provocative content, such as nude character skins, the primary driver behind NetEase's decision is likely financial. As a free-to-play title, Marvel Rivals relies heavily on in-app purchases for character bundles containing skins, sprays, and other cosmetics. The availability of free cosmetic mods could severely undermine the game's monetization strategy and profitability. Therefore, the ban on mods represents a necessary, albeit potentially unpopular, business decision.
