NetEase Games is making significant adjustments to the Marvel Rivals post-launch roadmap, shortening its seasons and committing to introduce at least one new hero each month. This strategic shift aims to maintain the live service momentum and keep the player base engaged.
The new plan was highlighted in the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video. The video, which runs for 15 minutes, provided insights into Season 2's launch on April 11, introducing Emma Frost as the new Vanguard. Additionally, Ultron will join mid-season, though his class details will be revealed closer to his debut. These new heroes are set to bring fresh abilities and dynamics to the game, but the most significant changes will take effect starting with Season 3.
In Marvel Rivals Season 3, the season duration will be reduced from three months to two, allowing for faster content updates without compromising the promise of releasing a new hero every half-season. This change will significantly shorten the wait time for new heroes after Emma Frost and Ultron.
Guangyun Chen, the creative director of Marvel Rivals, shared in the Dev Vision video, "Since the launch of Season 1, we’ve been deeply contemplating how Marvel Rivals can continuously deliver fun and engaging experiences for you all. Social media feedback has added some pressure to keep the game as exciting as it was since its December launch, and to a certain extent, we agree."
Chen emphasized NetEase's goal to keep the audience's excitement alive, akin to the game's opening months, stating, "The real adventure with Marvel Rivals is just beginning." He further explained that the company aims to fulfill fans' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes by introducing new modes and a diverse roster of characters. After extensive internal discussions and evaluations, NetEase will adjust its systems to manage the increased content flow, with more details to be shared before Season 3 launches.
NetEase recently unveiled details about Marvel Rivals Season 2, transitioning from a vampire takeover theme to a new storyline centered around the Hellfire Gala. This shift will bring new outfits, maps, and characters, with further information to be disclosed in the coming weeks.
Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals has been a massive success, attracting 10 million players within three days. The game, a free-to-play superhero team-based PvP shooter, was released on December 6 across PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. On Steam alone, it achieved a peak of 480,990 concurrent players at launch, and Season 1 in January saw an impressive 644,269 concurrent players, ranking it as the 15th most-played game on Valve's platform.
Despite a recent decline in concurrent players, Marvel Rivals remains highly popular and is among Steam's most-played games. The upcoming Season 2 and the planned Season 3 are expected to reinvigorate the player base.
