The new LEGO River Steamboat is a stunning set that offers a deeply engaging building experience. The quality of a LEGO set is not just in the finished model but in the journey of construction, and the River Steamboat exemplifies this beautifully. The build process has a natural flow, with each step leading seamlessly into the next. The ship's design, with its easily removable layers, allows for full access to the intricate details within each section of the boat. LEGO has long catered to adult enthusiasts with its modular buildings, and this set extends that concept to a modular boat, showcasing meticulous attention to both unique and everyday details that come together to create a cohesive masterpiece.

Drawing inspiration from the grand paddle boats that once navigated the Mississippi River in the 1800s, the LEGO River Steamboat captures the essence of these historical vessels. Initially used for industrial transport, these steamboats evolved into pleasure boats offering amenities and gambling, a tradition that continues today. My wife and I experienced this firsthand during our honeymoon in New Orleans, enjoying a riverboat cruise complete with dining, dancing, and jazz music.
This LEGO set is a dream for enthusiasts. It features a detailed jazz lounge and dining room, as well as functional areas like a boiler engine room connected to the paddle wheel. Pushing the boat activates the wheel, while the pilothouse steering wheel controls the rudder. Additional spaces include a kitchen, sleeping quarters for the crew, and an anchor with a chain that rolls up on a spool. Another feature allows for raising and lowering the boarding stages on the ship's bow.
The set is divided into 32 bags containing 4,090 pieces, starting with the base that includes the boiler room and a miniature nautical museum. Here, you'll find not only the boat's engine but also a piston engine, an aeolipile (steam turbine), and a Watt steam engine. Adjacent to the engine room is a compact kitchen with a refrigerator, stove, and basin sink. The minimalist design and clever use of color to repurpose pieces, like turning a hot dog bun into an engine reinforcement, are hallmarks of LEGO's ingenuity.
One level up is the main deck, housing the dining room and jazz lounge. Positioned above the stern, the lounge comes with tiny LEGO accessories like drums, a saxophone, a microphone, and an upright bass. The dining room is elegantly appointed with tablecloth elements and attractive chairs, with light fixtures straddling the inside and outside of the compartment. The walls feature posters advertising on-board entertainment, including a stylized depiction of the A-Frame Cabin from another LEGO Ideas set (see at Amazon).
The dining room is built separately and then placed into the larger structure, creating additional deck space where minifigures can enjoy the view. However, the set does not include minifigures, which might have added more life and playfulness to the ship. Perhaps LEGO intended this set to be more for display than for play.
The crew deck, one floor above the main deck, includes beds and a bathroom with a toilet, sink, and shower stall. The pilothouse above features a steering wheel that turns the rudder through a rod threaded through all four levels of the ship—a testament to the impressive planning and engineering involved. Such mechanical details will be appreciated by any LEGO builder.
Many small details enhance the set's charm, such as white billowy flags repurposed from croissant accessories, clean white railings lining the outer decks, and patterned tiles in the lounge areas that mimic rugs. Though large, the set feels like it has fewer than its 4,090 pieces due to its efficient design. Yet, after building and exploring its detailed rooms, you'll appreciate where those extra pieces went.
William Strunk's principle from The Elements of Style—"Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences"—aptly describes the River Steamboat. Every brick serves a purpose, every rod and stud has a function, and every decorative element is both pleasing and essential. Each room and space contributes to the overall beauty and functionality of the ship. This LEGO set is truly a build for enthusiasts.
LEGO River Steamboat, Set #21356, retails for $329.99 and comprises 4,090 pieces. It is available exclusively at the LEGO Store.
