Larian Studios Shifts Focus to New Game, Enforces Media Blackout

by Riley May 13,2025

Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed *Baldur’s Gate 3*, has announced that it is now fully focused on its next game, entering a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. While fans eagerly await the release of *Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8* this year, the studio has made it clear that their "full attention" is on crafting their next major title.

Reflecting on the studio's journey, Larian boss Swen Vincke took to Twitter to express his nostalgia and excitement about the future. "But the story ain't over yet," Vincke tweeted, hinting at more to come from the studio. In a follow-up statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that Swen and the team's focus is on their next game, emphasizing a move to a media blackout to keep details under wraps.

Got me all nostalgic - it really has been an incredible journey so far. But the story ain't over yet. Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don't mind. https://t.co/eLSTv3CXb4

What we know about Larian's next project is more about what it isn't than what it is. It won't be a sequel to *Baldur’s Gate 3* or any Dungeons & Dragons game. Instead, it's a brand new game, as Larian was eager to move on from their unsuccessful attempts to generate internal enthusiasm for a *Baldur's Gate* follow-up.

In November 2023, Vincke hinted at the studio's next project, saying, "I wish I could tell you about our next big game but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries," in response to *Baldur’s Gate 3*'s multiple nominations at The Game Awards. He expressed excitement about the new project, teasing its innovative potential.

Prior to *Baldur’s Gate 3*'s launch in July 2023, Vincke also mentioned to IGN that a sequel to Larian's *Divinity: Original Sin* series is on the horizon, though fans should not expect it immediately. "It's our own universe we built, so we're definitely gonna get back there at some point," Vincke explained, emphasizing the need for a creative break after completing *Baldur’s Gate 3*.

While *Divinity* isn't next on the list, speculation abounds about what Larian's new game might entail. Could it be a departure into science fiction, a modern-day setting, or perhaps an entirely new genre? Given Larian's history with fantasy RPGs, the possibilities are intriguing. However, with the media blackout in place, it may be years before we uncover the details of this eagerly anticipated project.
