Hideo Kojima reveals how Norman Reedus quickly signed on to star in Death Stranding. Despite the game being in its very early stages of development, Reedus immediately agreed to Kojima's pitch during a sushi dinner, even before a script existed. Within a month, Reedus was in the studio for motion capture, likely contributing to the iconic 2016 E3 teaser trailer.
This rapid agreement highlights Reedus' trust in Kojima, a highly respected figure in the gaming industry. Death Stranding, while initially surprising many, became a critically acclaimed success, largely due to Reedus' compelling performance as Sam Porter Bridges. His portrayal, alongside other Hollywood talent, helped solidify the game's unique post-apocalyptic narrative and its slow-burn popularity.
Kojima's account also sheds light on his own circumstances at the time. Having recently established Kojima Productions as an independent studio following his departure from Konami, he was essentially starting from scratch. His prior collaboration with Reedus on the cancelled Silent Hills project (famously represented by the P.T. demo), however, provided the crucial connection that led to their partnership on Death Stranding. Now, with Death Stranding 2 in development, Reedus is set to reprise his role, further solidifying this unexpected yet highly successful collaboration.
