Discard players, rejoice. Khonshu, the God of the Moon, has joined *Marvel Snap*, bringing a powerful tool for discard-centric decks. This card, one of the most complex released by Second Dinner to date, deserves a closer look at how it functions and can enhance your gameplay.
Khonshu is a 6-cost, 5-power card with an intricate ability that evolves as you discard it. Initially, when discarded, Khonshu returns to your hand in its next phase as a 6-cost, 8-power card. Its On Reveal effect at this stage resurrects a discarded card to another location with its power set to 8. If discarded again, Khonshu comes back as its final phase, a 6-cost, 12-power card, with an On Reveal effect that resurrects a discarded card to another location with its power set to 12.
Each time Khonshu is discarded and returns to your hand, it upgrades, enhancing its On Reveal effect's potency. This mechanic is reminiscent of Apocalypse's function in discard decks. The strategy often involves discarding Khonshu one or two times before playing it on the final turn to resurrect a card that benefits significantly from the power boost, such as Iron Man or Gorr the God Butcher. Despite the limitation of not being able to choose which card is revived, using Khonshu's final phase to revive a 1-cost, 12-power Meek can often clinch victory.
Experimentation will be key to finding the optimal deck for Khonshu, as it may not fit seamlessly into traditional discard strategies. It seems best suited for a Darkhawk-style Stature deck or alternative discard-type decks. Here's an example of the former:
This deck includes only one Series 5 card, Fenris Wolf, which is crucial as resurrecting an opponent's discarded card can be a game-winning strategy. The gameplay involves filling the opponent's deck with rocks to bolster Darkhawk while maximizing Khonshu discards. Key cards like Moon Knight and Blade ensure multiple discards of Khonshu. Timing is crucial; you want to ensure Moon Knight targets Khonshu over Rock Slide. The strategy culminates in playing Stature early, followed by Darkhawk on turn 5 and Khonshu on turn 6, resurrecting a card with 8-12 power.
While Khonshu may not fit traditional discard decks alongside Apocalypse due to its high cost, there's room for experimentation. An alternative list incorporating energy ramp with Corvus Glaive could be:
Scorn, the only Series 5 card, can be substituted with other discard activators like Colleen Wing or X-23 for additional energy ramp. This deck relies on playing Corvus Glaive on turn 3 to manage energy, allowing you to play Khonshu alongside other discard activators to buff Apocalypse and flood the board. Whether this outperforms traditional discard decks without Khonshu remains to be seen, but with cards like Moon Knight, Blade, and Lady Sif, reaching Khonshu's final phase while keeping Apocalypse strong for Dracula is feasible.
Regardless of your preference for discard decks, Khonshu's power and complexity make it a valuable addition to Marvel Snap. It's likely to feature prominently in hybrid discard decks and could become meta-relevant. If you have the resources, acquiring Khonshu is a worthwhile investment for its potential impact on your gameplay.
