Warner Bros. and HBO Max have officially unveiled the first six cast members set to reimagine iconic Hogwarts professors in the highly anticipated Harry Potter series. Following months of speculation about how this modern retelling will refresh the beloved tales of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, the official lineup was revealed today.
Leading the charge is John Lithgow (known for his roles in Conclave and Dexter), who confirmed his role as Albus Dumbledore earlier this year. Fans will also recognize Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) as Rubeus Hagrid and Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, Black Mirror) as Severus Snape. Joining them are Janet McTeer (Me Before You, The Menu) as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon (The Favourite, Present Laughter) as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show, Alice Through the Looking Glass) as Argus Filch.

“We’re thrilled to have such incredible talent joining us, and we can’t wait to see them bring these cherished characters to life in exciting new ways,” said showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner and director of multiple episodes and executive producer Mark Mylod in a joint statement.
Characters like Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, and Severus Snape are not only household names within the Harry Potter universe but also fixtures of popular culture. Lithgow acknowledged the weight of stepping into such a legendary role during an interview with ScreenRant earlier this year.
“It’s not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the rest of my life,” he admitted. “But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are revisiting Harry Potter, and that’s made this choice especially difficult. By the time we finish, I’ll be nearly 87, but I’ve said yes.”
While the series does not yet have a confirmed release date, Warner Bros. has hinted that filming will commence shortly. Details about how the show will differentiate itself from both the original books and the film adaptations remain under wraps, though the creators have teased that it will explore Harry’s story with greater depth than possible in two-hour films. J.K. Rowling, the series’ controversial creator, remains involved in its development.
