George R.R. Martin Calls Game of Thrones Show a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms 'As Faithful an Adaptation as a Reasonable Man Could Hope For'

George R.R. Martin, the acclaimed author of A Song of Ice and Fire, has expressed his enthusiastic approval for HBO's upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series, calling it "as faithful an adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for."

In a recent blog post, Martin revealed that filming for the six-episode series has concluded, and it remains on schedule for a late 2024 release, possibly in the fall. Unlike the previous prequel, House of the Dragon, Martin states he's a strong supporter of this adaptation.

He shared, "I’ve viewed all six episodes (the final two in rough cuts), and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Dunk and Egg have always been personal favorites, and the actors portraying them are exceptionally talented. The entire cast delivers outstanding performances. You'll be captivated by the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall."

The series adapts The Hedge Knight, the first novella in the Dunk and Egg series. Martin acknowledges the show's focus on character development over large-scale action sequences. "While there's a spectacular fight scene, it lacks the dragons, massive battles, and White Walkers of other entries. It's a character-driven story emphasizing duty, honor, and chivalry."

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen (Egg). Although the premiere is still some months away, HBO has unveiled several images and a short teaser trailer.

Martin concluded his post with a playful reminder of his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter, stating his intention to adapt the subsequent Dunk & Egg novellas, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight, once the highly anticipated novel is complete.
