Fast and Furious: Chronological Viewing Guide

by Nathan May 22,2025

As one of the longest-running movie franchises, the Fast and Furious series has transformed from humble street racing films into a spectacular showcase of Hollywood action, amassing nearly $2 billion USD at the global box office. With a total of twelve films (nine mainline entries, one spinoff, and two shorts), the storyline has become increasingly complex. With the latest addition, Fast X, now available for streaming on Amazon, we've created this comprehensive guide to help you watch the Fast and Furious movies in chronological order.

At the end of this article, you'll also find a list of the films in their release order, for those who prefer to follow the series as it was originally presented. Please note that the animated series, Fast & Furious: Spy Racers, is not included in this guide due to its minimal impact on the main narrative.

Fast and Furious Movies in Chronological Order

1. The Fast and the Furious (2001)

The saga kicks off with the franchise's debut film, The Fast and the Furious. In this action-packed opener, undercover cop Brian O'Conner, played by Paul Walker, infiltrates a crew of carjackers led by Vin Diesel's Dom Toretto. As Brian immerses himself in the world of illegal street racing, he forms bonds with Dom and falls for his sister, Mia Toretto (Jordan Brewster), eventually prioritizing these relationships over his duty. This film introduces Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz, Dom's love interest, cementing her as a key character in the series.

2. The Turbo Charged Prelude for 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)

The Turbo Charged Prelude for 2 Fast 2 Furious bridges the gap between the first and second films, showing Brian O'Conner's journey from LA to Miami as he evades law enforcement. This six-minute silent short film features several races and is not essential, but it's a nice addition to the timeline.

3. 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)

The only film in the series without Dom Toretto, 2 Fast 2 Furious introduces Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej Parker (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges). Brian O'Connor and Roman go undercover to take down a drug lord, securing their freedom in return. The film also introduces a new love interest for Brian in Eva Mendes's Monica Fuentes, who reappears briefly in Fast Five.
