With Diablo 4's first expansion on the horizon, key developers shed light on their vision for the game's future and the broader Diablo franchise.
Blizzard aims for long-term engagement with Diablo 4, fueled by its record-breaking sales. In a recent VGC interview, Diablo series head Rod Fergusson and executive producer Gavian Whishaw emphasized the importance of sustained player interest across all Diablo games. Whether it's Diablo 4, 3, 2, or the original, continued player engagement is a win for Blizzard.
"One thing you'll notice about Blizzard is that we rarely shut down games," Fergusson told VGC. "You can still play Diablo, Diablo 2, Diablo 2: Resurrected, and Diablo 3. People playing Blizzard games is fantastic."
Addressing the question of Diablo 4's player count relative to previous installments, Fergusson stated that it's not a concern which game players choose. The success of Diablo 2: Resurrected, a remaster of a 21-year-old game, highlights the enduring appeal of the franchise. The focus is on maintaining a thriving Blizzard gaming ecosystem.
Fergusson clarified that Blizzard wants players to enjoy whichever game they prefer. While increased player migration from Diablo 3 to Diablo 4 would be beneficial, the company isn't actively trying to force players to switch.
"Whether they're playing Diablo 4 today, tomorrow, or later, our goal is to create content and features so compelling that players want to play Diablo 4," Fergusson explained. "That's why we continue to support Diablo 3 and Diablo 2. Our aim is to create appealing content that draws players in."
