Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just pulled back the curtain on an exciting new chapter for their sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, with a lineup of thrilling content under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy." This year promises to deliver four major content updates, featuring two expansive paid expansions and two free major updates that will enhance the experience for all players.
Kicking things off is the Rite of the Nine, a free update that reimagines the dungeon experience, offering both new and seasoned players a fresh dive into the depths. Familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep will receive unique twists, alongside new encounters with Orin and refreshed dungeon weapons.
Mark your calendars for July 15, when the first paid expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, launches. This expansion embarks on a multiyear saga, reintroducing the enigmatic Nine and spotlighting new characters such as the ally Lodi and the Warlock Vanguard, Ikora. Set on the new destination Kepler, inspired by the intricate puzzle-solving and exploration of Destiny 2's dungeons, players can expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Alongside The Edge of Fate, a series of "major core game innovations" will debut on July 15. These include revamped armor and gear systems to enrich buildcrafting possibilities and a new activity selection screen, the Portal. This screen allows players to easily choose from Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops, tailored for solo players seeking short, self-contained gameplay sessions. With 50 new modifiers, players can customize their gameplay and chase specific rewards, ensuring a constantly evolving experience.
For those eager to jump into the action, pre-order benefits are available, including instant unlocks such as an Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. Here's what you can expect from the pre-order options:

Note that the Year of Prophecy Collector's Edition, while available, has sold out at the time of writing.
The excitement continues with the Ash & Iron update on September 9, followed by the second expansion, Renegades, on December 2. Wrapping up the year, the Shadow & Order update rolls out on March 3.
Destiny 2: Renegades draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, merging Destiny's distinctive storytelling and gameplay with themes and elements from this iconic sci-fi franchise.
This robust content roadmap comes as welcome news, especially following the layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, just under a year after 100 other layoffs at Bungie.
While Destiny 2 continues to captivate players, Bungie is also busy with other projects. The reboot of the classic franchise Marathon was revealed in May 2023, with a hands-on preview from IGN stating, "After playing enough Marathon to get a pretty good feel for it in its alpha state, I’m already fairly confident it’ll scratch the Bungie PvP itch that’s been left unscratched for a number of years now. Here’s hoping they’ll knock it out of the park when it comes to PC and consoles in September."
