Gearbox's highly anticipated first-person shooter, Borderlands 4, is set to hit the shelves 11 days earlier than originally planned. This exciting news was shared by development chief Randy Pitchford in a video that inadvertently went live ahead of schedule. Originally slated for a September 23 release, Borderlands 4 will now launch on September 12 across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
In the video, Pitchford expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "Everything is going great, actually. In fact, everything is going kind of the best-case scenario. The game is awesome, the team is cooking, and so the launch date for Borderlands 4 is changing. We’re moving it forward. The launch date is now September 12." He further emphasized the rarity of such a move, exclaiming, "What?! This never happens you guys! This never happens! We’re moving the launch date forward! You’re gonna get Borderlands 4 earlier!"
Pitchford also teased an upcoming PlayStation State of Play event focused on Borderlands 4, which is expected to be released soon.
The decision to advance the release date has sparked speculation about its potential connection to the impending launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6). GTA 6 is currently scheduled for a fall 2025 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, with a broad release window that could overshadow other games like Borderlands 4. Given that both games are under the Take-Two umbrella, with 2K Games publishing Borderlands 4 and Rockstar developing GTA 6, there might be strategic reasons for the earlier launch. Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, oversees both projects and would aim to optimize their market performance.
The earlier release of Borderlands 4 might also suggest that GTA 6's specific release date within the fall 2025 window has become clearer, prompting adjustments to avoid direct competition. This move could potentially rule out a GTA 6 release in September or August, leaving October, November, or December 2025 as viable options. However, there's a risk that releasing Take-Two's major titles too close together could lead to self-cannibalization, especially with another 2K game, Mafia: The Old Country, slated for a summer 2025 launch.
In a February interview with IGN, Zelnick addressed concerns about the potential overlap of Take-Two's big releases, asserting that the company plans its launch dates to minimize any risk of cannibalization. He emphasized the importance of giving consumers ample time to enjoy each game before moving on to the next, stating, "No, I think we will plan the releases so as not to have that be a problem... And what we found is when you're giving consumers hits, they tend to be interested in pursuing other hits."
Despite these assurances, the possibility of GTA 6 facing delays into early winter or the first quarter of 2026 remains. When asked about the confidence in hitting the fall 2025 target for GTA 6, Zelnick responded cautiously, acknowledging the inherent risks of delays but expressing optimism about the project's progress.
