"Age of Empires Mobile Introduces New Mercenary Troops System"

by Zoe May 27,2025

Ever dreamed of witnessing Joan of Arc commanding Roman Centurions in battle, or Hannibal Barca leading Japanese Samurai to conquer Rome? With the latest update to Age of Empires Mobile, these scenarios can become a reality thanks to the new Mercenary Troops system.

Starting at level 26, players will unlock the Mercenary Camp structure, allowing them to hire and recruit units that are typically exclusive to other factions. Not only can you contract these formidable warriors, but you can also unlock and upgrade technology to enhance their capabilities even further. To sweeten the deal, the first mercenaries are available for free through a newly launched event.

The update introduces a diverse array of Mercenary units, including Byzantine Cataphracts, Swiss Pikemen, Persian Immortals, Indian Battle Elephants, Roman Centurions, Egyptian Chariot Archers, Japanese Samurai, and Korean Archers. Each of these units comes with technology upgrades to boost their already impressive battlefield prowess.

Age of Empires Mobile Mercenary Troops SystemBlood MoneyThe new Mercenary Troops system evokes memories of Total War games, where overwhelming foes with hired swords was a thrilling strategy in titles like Rome: Total War and Medieval II. However, this feature might be divisive, with some players concerned about potential imbalances it could introduce to the game's dynamics.

The effectiveness of the Mercenary Troops system will ultimately be determined by player feedback and gameplay experience. There's even speculation about the future addition of unique units like the historical Landsknechts. Only time will tell how this feature evolves.
