Les premiers chapitres (1 et 2) présentent le Wanderer, votre personnage, agissant indépendamment. Vous aiderez Sun Jian, Cao Cao et Liu Bei, participant à des événements clés comme la rébellion du turban jaune et la bataille de Hulao Gate, sans s'engager dans une faction spécifique.
Le chapitre 3 présente le choix pivot. Vous serez invité à sélectionner une faction (Sun Jian, Liu Bei ou Cao Cao) avant la fin du chapitre. Le jeu fournit des batailles supplémentaires pour vous aider à vous familiariser avec chaque faction avant de prendre votre décision.
Pour s'allier avec une faction, complétez un nombre spécifique de missions: trois pour Sun Jian, deux pour Liu Bei et un pour Cao Cao. À la fin, une mission déclenchera, vous obligera à choisir une alliance. Seules les factions avec des missions terminées seront sélectionnables. Vous pouvez cependant terminer toutes les missions de faction avant de faire votre choix final.
Votre décision est permanente. Une fois que vous avez choisi une faction, les autres deviennent inaccessibles. Vous perdrez la capacité d'accepter les quêtes secondaires de leurs officiers, entravant votre lien et vos gains de points de compétence potentiels. Le choix de la faction peut avoir un impact sur la difficulté; Par exemple, s'allier avec Liu Bei limite initialement l'interaction des officiers et les opportunités de quêtes secondaires.
