Blumhouse Productions, the renowned horror studio, is gearing up to celebrate its 15th anniversary with a bang. They're bringing back the 2022 hit, M3GAN, to theaters in a limited engagement just before the release of its sequel. This move, however, is not without its controversies, as it introduces new features that actively encourage the use of smartphones during the movie.
As part of their Halfway to Halloween initiative, Shudder is set to screen M3GAN, alongside Ma and Annabelle, in one-night-only events. These screenings incorporate Meta’s innovative "Movie Mate" technology, which lets audience members interact directly with M3GAN through a chatbot. Additionally, this technology offers second-screen capabilities, providing exclusive content in real-time to enhance the viewing experience.
“Movie Mate is exclusively available to those in the theater and can be accessed by DM'ing the Instagram account @M3GAN to kick off the experience,” Blumhouse detailed in a statement to Variety. This initiative aims to utilize Meta’s technology to elevate the 'second screen' experience, building anticipation for M3GAN 2.0, set to premiere on June 27. Fans attending these screenings can look forward to sneak peeks, exclusive messages from the films' directors and talent, and even surprise appearances in select markets.
While this approach may raise eyebrows among traditional moviegoers who cherish the uninterrupted cinematic experience, it's designed to engage a new generation of film fans. It remains to be seen how audiences will respond to this interactive twist. Personally, I hope this trend doesn't extend to regular screenings, as it could further dilute the magic of the theater.
The special M3GAN screening is scheduled for April 30 across various theaters nationwide, with Annabelle following on May 7, and Ma on May 14. Mark your calendars, as M3GAN 2.0 will hit U.S. theaters on June 27.
