Paradox Interactive's cancelled life sim, Life by You, continues to spark conversation thanks to recently surfaced screenshots. These images, shared online by former developers, offer a compelling look at the game's potential.
Following the unexpected cancellation of Life by You, new screenshots have emerged, compiled on Twitter (X) by @SimMattically. These images, sourced from the portfolios of former artists like Richard Kho, Eric Maki, and Chris Lewis, provide a detailed look at the game's progress. Chris Lewis's GitHub page even offers insights into animation, scripting, lighting, modder tools, shaders, and VFX development.
The visuals, while not drastically different from the final gameplay trailer, showcase notable improvements. Fans have praised the enhanced detail, noting more refined character models with improved customization sliders and presets, and richer environmental textures. The clothing options, showcased in the screenshots, suggest a robust wardrobe system with outfits suited for varied weather conditions. One fan poignantly commented, "Such high hopes, such crushing disappointment...it could have been amazing."
Paradox Interactive's Deputy CEO, Mattias Lilja, previously explained the cancellation, citing the game's shortcomings and the uncertainty of reaching a satisfactory release within a reasonable timeframe. CEO Fredrik Wester echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the team's dedication but acknowledging the impracticality of continued development.
The cancellation remains a shock to many, especially considering the anticipation surrounding Life by You's potential as a competitor to EA's The Sims franchise. The abrupt closure of Paradox Tectonic, the studio behind the project, further underscores the unexpected nature of the decision.
