Switch 2 Introduces Advanced Controller Features

New Patent Reveals Joy-Con with Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The eagerly awaited Switch 2 is set to revolutionize gaming with enhanced Joy-Con capabilities, including the much-talked-about mouse support. On February 6, 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a patent filed by Nintendo that sheds light on these new features.

The patent details the innovative functionalities of the Switch 2 Joy-Con, emphasizing its potential to operate as a mouse. This feature was hinted at in the Switch 2 reveal trailer, where the controller was shown gliding over a flat surface, suggesting its mouse-like potential. Despite Nintendo's silence on the specifics of the Switch 2, this patent adds credence to the rumors.

Switch 2 Joy-Con: Mouse Functionality and Beyond

The Joy-Con for the Switch 2 maintains the detachable nature of its predecessor, allowing for versatile use. The standout feature highlighted in the patent is the Joy-Con's ability to function as a mouse. According to the document, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."

Alongside this, the Joy-Con can be charged using a new docking station capable of charging up to two controllers simultaneously. A novel attachment that magnetically connects the Joy-Con to the console, complete with a wrist strap similar to the original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con, was also introduced.

The patent also unveiled a new set of controllers resembling a split standard controller, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse functionality. These can be combined using a special attachment to form a standard controller.

It's important to note that these patented features may not all make it to the final product, as Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these Joy-Con capabilities or any other related devices for the Switch 2.
