Skyblivion, a Fan Remake of Oblivion in Skyrim's Engine, Is Still Targeting This Year

Skyblivion, the ambitious fan-made remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion built within the Skyrim engine, is targeting a 2025 release. A recent developer update stream reaffirmed this goal, showcasing impressive progress. Developed by a dedicated team of volunteers, Skyblivion represents a truly monumental modding undertaking, years in the making. Despite the sheer scale, the team remains confident in meeting their ambitious deadline, expressing hope to even surpass their projected completion date with continued community support.

Calling Skyblivion a simple one-to-one remake significantly undersells the project's scope. The team is not only meticulously recreating Oblivion's world but also enhancing it. This includes overhauling aspects like ensuring unique items truly stand out and bolstering the impact of existing bosses, with Mannimarco specifically mentioned. The livestream showcased the "A Brush with Death" quest, highlighting the stunning visual fidelity achieved.

This impressive undertaking takes on added intrigue considering the persistent rumors of an official Oblivion remake. Alleged details of such a project surfaced earlier this year, hinting at combat overhauls and other potential changes. While Microsoft declined comment, the existence of an Oblivion remaster was inadvertently revealed in documents from the Activision Blizzard/FTC trial in 2023. The status of several projects mentioned in those documents remains uncertain, including the Oblivion and Fallout 3 remasters.

Should Microsoft and Bethesda proceed with an official Oblivion relaunch, Skyblivion's future might become uncertain. Bethesda games have a rich history of thriving modding communities, extending from older titles to the recent Starfield. The hope is that Skyblivion avoids the fate of Fallout London, which encountered difficulties shortly before its intended release.
