Valve's SteamOS Update Opens Doors for Wider Device Compatibility, Including the ROG Ally
Valve's recent SteamOS 3.6.9 Beta update, nicknamed "Megafixer," introduces key support for the ASUS ROG Ally, marking a significant step towards broader third-party device compatibility. This expansion of SteamOS functionality is a key development in the handheld gaming market.

Enhanced Third-Party Hardware Integration
The August 8th update, currently available on the Steam Deck's Beta and Preview channels, notably includes enhanced support for the ROG Ally's control scheme. This is a departure from previous SteamOS updates, as it explicitly addresses support for a competitor's hardware.

This suggests a broader vision for SteamOS beyond its current Steam Deck exclusivity. Valve designer Lawrence Yang confirmed this trajectory in a recent interview, stating the team is actively pursuing broader handheld support.
Valve's Expanding SteamOS Vision

Yang's comments underscore Valve's long-held ambition for a more versatile SteamOS, capable of functioning across a range of devices. While full deployment on non-Steam Deck hardware isn't imminent, this update signals substantial progress towards that goal. This aligns with Valve's original vision of an open and adaptable gaming platform. Though ASUS hasn't officially endorsed SteamOS for the ROG Ally, this update is a considerable achievement in realizing Valve's long-term strategy.
Reshaping the Handheld Gaming Landscape

Previously, the ROG Ally functioned primarily as a controller within the Steam ecosystem. This update improves key mapping, laying the groundwork for potential future SteamOS compatibility. While YouTuber NerdNest notes that full functionality isn't yet realized, even with the beta update, the implications are substantial.
This could mark a pivotal shift in handheld gaming, potentially making SteamOS a viable alternative operating system for various handheld consoles. Although the immediate impact on ROG Ally functionality is limited, this update represents a crucial step towards a more inclusive and flexible SteamOS ecosystem.
