Robert Eggers to Write and Direct Labyrinth Sequel

by Camila Mar 16,2025

Robert Eggers, fresh off his critically acclaimed gothic horror film Nosferatu, is set to direct a sequel to Jim Henson's beloved fantasy classic, Labyrinth, according to Variety. Eggers will co-write the screenplay with Sjón, his collaborator on The Northman. This follows a previous attempt at a sequel with director Scott Derrickson, which seemingly stalled. TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have now opted for Eggers' vision.

PlayThe original 1986 *Labyrinth* starred David Bowie as the Goblin King Jareth, who kidnaps the baby brother of Jennifer Connelly's character. Connelly embarks on a fantastical journey through a dark fantasy world, aided by a memorable cast of Henson puppets, to rescue her sibling.

Eggers' plate is full, however. He's also directing a werewolf movie titled Werwulf, aiming for a Christmas 2026 release. Details are scarce, but the film is set in 13th-century England and will feature dialogue in the Old English of the period. One can safely assume werewolf transformations will be a key plot element.

Eggers' Nosferatu, a remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film, was released last Christmas. Set in 19th-century Germany, the film follows a real estate agent whose trip to Transylvania to sell a castle to a mysterious count unleashes dark, vampiric horrors upon him and his wife.

Nosferatu garnered four Oscar nominations this year, including Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Read our review here.
