As the Nintendo Switch 2 launches this week, Nintendo has issued a clear instruction to new owners: do not remove the protective film from the device's screen.
The company has made the console's health and safety guide available as a downloadable PDF, which contains a dedicated section on how to handle the system with care (thanks, NintendoSoup).
A specific warning states: "The screen features a protective film designed to contain glass fragments in case of damage. Do not remove it."
This adhesive layer essentially makes the Switch 2 screen shatter-resistant. Peeling it off would increase the risk of glass scattering if the screen were ever to crack.
So, when you unbox your Switch 2 later this week, be sure to leave that particular piece of packaging in place.
Additional care tips from Nintendo advise against using the console in "dusty or smoky environments"—so perhaps leave it at home when heading to a club or a dusty antique bookstore.
The guide also recommends, "Charge the built-in batteries at least once every six months. Extended periods of inactivity may prevent the batteries from holding a charge." Presumably, you'll be too busy exploring Super Mario's latest adventure for that to become an issue.

Some warnings are more straightforward. Nintendo cautions, "Do not expose the device to fire, microwaves, direct sunlight, or extreme temperatures." That seems like sound advice!
After years of rumors, teasers, and official reveals, Nintendo will finally launch the Switch 2 this Thursday, June 5, 2025.
Last month, some customers started receiving their consoles ahead of the official street date. Unboxing videos and footage of the startup sequence appeared online, only to be quickly taken down by Nintendo.
