Exciting news for fans of the iconic anime and toy franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam: a live-action film adaptation is now in full production, thanks to a co-financing agreement between Bandai Namco and Legendary. Initially announced back in 2018, the project had been relatively quiet until recent updates from Legendary and the newly formed Bandai Namco Filmworks America. This development signals that fans can finally start anticipating the first-ever live-action Gundam film hitting the big screen.
The film, which currently does not have an official title, will be penned and directed by Kim Mickle, known for her work on Sweet Tooth. It is slated for a global theatrical release. While specific plot details and a release date remain under wraps, a teaser poster has been released to build anticipation.
This marks the first live-action venture for the franchise, which boasts an impressive legacy including 25 anime series, 34 animated films, 27 original anime productions, and a highly successful toy line. Collectively, these elements generate over $900 million annually.
Legendary and Bandai Namco have stated, "We plan to steadily announce details as they become finalized." They also highlighted the historical significance of Mobile Suit Gundam, which began broadcasting in 1979. The series pioneered the 'real robot anime' genre, moving away from the traditional binary of good versus evil. It offered realistic portrayals of war, detailed scientific exploration, and complex human dramas, treating robots as 'weapons' known as 'mobile suits,' which sparked a significant cultural phenomenon.
