NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania on October 29th, 2024. While this marks the end for players in these regions, the game will continue operating in Asia and select MENA territories.
Initially released in China in September 2021, the game enjoyed early success. A global launch followed in June 2022, but failed to maintain its initial momentum.
The game's blend of Clash Royale-style gameplay and the Harry Potter universe initially captivated players. However, criticism mounted over perceived pay-to-win mechanics and changes to the reward system that negatively impacted free-to-play players. These alterations slowed progression for non-spending players, leading to player frustration and ultimately contributing to the game's closure in certain regions.
The game has already been removed from app stores in the affected regions. Players in regions where the game remains available can still experience the Hogwarts atmosphere, attend classes, uncover secrets, and engage in wizard duels.
