FFXIV Mobile Version Listed in China's Approved Games

A recent report from video game market research firm Niko Partners reveals a potential mobile adaptation of Final Fantasy XIV, a joint venture between Square Enix and Tencent, slated for release in China. This follows earlier, unconfirmed reports suggesting the two gaming giants were collaborating on such a project.

FFXIV Mobile: Still Largely Unconfirmed

Niko Partners' report details 15 games approved by China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) for release within the country. Among these is a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV, reportedly under development by Tencent. Other notable titles include mobile and PC versions of Rainbow Six, and mobile games based on Marvel properties (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and Dynasty Warriors 8.

While Tencent's involvement in a mobile FFXIV has been rumored, neither company has officially confirmed the project. Analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners, citing industry sources, suggests the mobile game will be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from the PC version. However, he emphasizes this information remains unconfirmed.

Tencent's extensive experience in the mobile gaming market makes this partnership a logical step for Square Enix, aligning with their stated goal of expanding to multiplatform releases for key franchises like Final Fantasy. Square Enix announced this multiplatform strategy earlier this year, signaling a shift towards broader accessibility for their flagship titles.
