The ninth anniversary of Fate/Grand Order was marred by controversy surrounding a significant update. The introduction of powerful new skills, requiring an increased number of "servant coins" to unlock, ignited a furious backlash from players.
Previously, maxing a five-star character needed six copies; the update increased this to eight, or nine to avoid an extensive grind. This angered players, particularly those who had already invested heavily in the game, feeling the new requirement negated the introduction of a pity system.
Escalating Anger and Threats
The response was swift and extreme. Players flooded social media with angry posts, including disturbing death threats directed at the developers. While player frustration is understandable, the severity of these threats overshadowed legitimate concerns and negatively impacted the game's community image.
Developer Response and Apology
FGO Part 2's development director, Yoshiki Kano, issued a public apology, acknowledging the negative impact of the append skills. The developers implemented changes allowing players to switch between unlocked skills while retaining the original skill's level and promised to restore servant coins spent on Holy Grail summoning and provide compensation.
A Temporary Fix?
Despite these measures, including 40 free pulls for all players, the core issue remains: the scarcity of servant coins and the high demand for duplicate characters. The eight-duplicate requirement for five-star character completion persists, leaving many players unsatisfied and questioning the long-term solution. The community's trust in the developers has been severely damaged.
The incident highlights the delicate balance developers must strike between monetization and player satisfaction. While immediate outrage may lessen with compensation, rebuilding trust requires open communication and addressing player concerns directly. The community's engagement is vital to the game's continued success.
