Fable Delayed to 2026, Microsoft Reveals Brand New Pre-Alpha Gameplay

by Emma Mar 15,2025

Microsoft has delayed the release of Fable from 2025 to 2026, but offered a first glimpse of exciting new gameplay footage to soften the blow. This highly anticipated reboot of the beloved Xbox franchise, originally developed by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios, is being crafted by Playground Games, the studio behind the acclaimed Forza Horizon series.

In a recent episode of the Xbox Podcast, Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, reassured fans that the delay is worthwhile. He emphasized his complete confidence in Playground Games, highlighting their track record of creating critically acclaimed, visually stunning, and exceptionally playable games like Forza Horizon. He described the upcoming Fable as a visually breathtaking and beautifully realized version of Albion, incorporating elements from previous games while offering a fresh, uniquely Playground Games perspective, complete with signature British humor. The delay, he explained, is to ensure the game meets the highest standards and delivers the best possible experience for players.

Accompanying the delay announcement, Microsoft unveiled approximately 50 seconds of pre-alpha gameplay footage. This sneak peek showcased various aspects of the game, including combat using a one-handed sword, a two-handed hammer, a two-handed sword, and a fireball magic attack. City exploration, horseback riding through a fantastical forest, and even the classic Fable tradition of kicking a chicken were also featured. The footage provides a solid preview of Playground Games’ vision and the impressive visual fidelity Duncan mentioned. A particularly memorable scene shows the protagonist setting a trap using sausages to lure a werewolf-like creature, leading to an ensuing battle.

Initially announced in 2020 as a "new beginning," Playground Games’ Fable reboot has been steadily unveiled through various showcases. A 2023 Xbox Game Showcase offered a first look, followed by another trailer during the June 2024 Xbox Showcase event. This marks the first mainline Fable game since 2010's Fable 3 and remains one of Xbox Game Studios' most anticipated upcoming titles.
