Get Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Before Switch 2

by Aria Feb 19,2026

Nintendo unveiled full Switch 2 specifications during its April Direct presentation, with US preorders still pending. While the console's pricing aligned with expectations, the announced launch prices for first-party games like $80 Mario Kart World raised eyebrows. The new Switch 2 accessory line also reflects noticeable price hikes from original Switch products.

My primary concern was the $85 Switch 2 Pro Controller, given my existing collection of Switch Pro controllers. Fortunately, Nintendo confirmed original Switch controllers will maintain compatibility with Switch 2 systems.

While the new Switch 2 Pro Controller offers upgraded features, existing Switch Pro controllers remain fully functional for most games. At $69.99, the standard Pro Controller presents significant savings compared to the $85 successor.

Retail inventories are diminishing as Switch 2's launch approaches, with Amazon currently stocking only third-party alternatives. Original Joy-Cons also maintain compatibility, though we generally recommend Pro Controllers for superior gameplay.

Switch 2 Pro Controller Release Timeline

The Switch 2 Pro Controller launches alongside the console on June 5. Preorders for both system and accessories begin April 24. Note that while backwards compatibility exists for older controllers, the Switch 2 Pro Controller will not work with original Switch consoles.

Early retail listings have surfaced at Walmart and Best Buy without confirmed preorder dates. Walmart's listings also showcase upcoming Switch 2 game preorders.
