Bungie announced this update in a blog post on December 15th, shifting from its previously planned September 24, 2025 release. Alongside this, the studio revealed new gameplay elements such as proximity chat, additional maps, and content passes.

According to Bungie’s "Vision of Marathon" blog post, buying the game grants full access plus a full year of free updates, including new maps, events, and a Season 1 battle pass. Players who join later won’t miss out—battle passes will remain available for purchase even after their seasons have begun.

Bungie also emphasized their commitment to "competitive integrity," assuring that victories will never depend on how much players spend, suggesting minimal reliance on microtransactions.

Bungie Rebuilds Momentum with Marathon

As Bungie’s first original title since Destiny in 2015, Marathon drew criticism following an alpha test that received mixed feedback and allegations of copied assets.

Players and streamers noted that while the alpha presented a compelling sci-fi setting and solid extraction shooter mechanics, it lacked a lasting impression in key areas. Bungie later acknowledged using stolen artwork from Bluesky artist ANTIREAL, which further damaged the game’s reputation.

With these recent announcements and the team’s pledge to "engage with the community," it’s evident Bungie is making a concerted effort to address backlash. This includes meaningful updates to both the game’s aesthetics and gameplay revealed in the latest developer update.

A More Distinct Visual Identity for Marathon

Marathon now features stronger visual storytelling—darker, more atmospheric lighting, towering and oppressive structures dominating the skyline, and scattered corpses and anomalies enriching the environment. Visual fidelity and audio clarity have also been upgraded, bringing the world to life with greater depth.

On the gameplay front, Marathon now includes expanded customization options such as unique weapon parts and diverse Runner archetypes, offering varied playstyles. New quality-of-life features like proximity chat, solo queue, and additional Runner types have also been integrated.

Marathon will launch in March 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. For more on Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, read our article on the game here:
