Blizzard Reveals Radical Overhaul of Overwatch 2, Including Return of Loot Boxes, Perks, and Third-Person Mode

Overwatch 2: A Seismic Shift in 2025

Overwatch 2 is poised for a major transformation in 2025, exceeding typical content updates with fundamental gameplay changes. The most significant addition? Hero Perks.

Nearly nine years after the original Overwatch's release, and two and a half years after Overwatch 2's launch, Season 15 (February 18th) introduces this game-altering mechanic.

Blizzard's announcement detailed extensive changes, including new collaborations, heroes, and a revolutionary game mode. This overhaul aims to revitalize Overwatch 2 in the face of stiff competition, notably from NetEase's Marvel Rivals.

Hero Perks: Reshaping Gameplay

Each hero gains two selectable perks – minor and major – unlocked at specific in-match levels. Minor perks subtly enhance base abilities (e.g., Orisa's primary fire heat refund on critical hits). Major perks drastically alter heroes mid-match (e.g., replacing Orisa's Javelin Spin with her Barrier). These are mutually exclusive choices, mirroring Heroes of the Storm's talent system.

Stadium Mode: A New Competitive Experience

Season 16 (April) introduces Stadium, a 5v5, best-of-7 round-based competitive mode. Between rounds, players spend currency to upgrade heroes, enhancing attributes or unlocking significant ability changes (e.g., flying Wraith Form for Reaper). While initially lacking perks, future integration isn't ruled out. Stadium uniquely features a selectable first/third-person perspective. It launches with 14 heroes, with more planned.

Overwatch Classic and 6v6: A Return to the Past and Future

Blizzard continues experimenting with 6v6, adding competitive open queue (max two tanks). Overwatch Classic, arriving mid-Season 16, revives the iconic "GOATs" meta (three tanks, three supports).

New Heroes: Freja and Aqua

Freja, a crossbow-wielding bounty hunter, joins in Season 16. Concept art for Aqua, a water-bending hero, was also revealed.

The Return of Loot Boxes (with Transparency)

Loot boxes are making a comeback, but exclusively through free avenues (battle pass, weekly rewards). Crucially, players will see drop rates before opening.

Competitive Updates: Hero Bans, Map Voting, and More

Season 15 resets competitive ranks, offering new rewards (Galactic weapon skins, charms). Season 16 introduces hero bans and map voting. Competitive expansion includes a new China stage, Face.it league integration, a new tournament system, and team-branded fan items.

Cosmetics and Collaborations

Numerous new cosmetics are planned, including a Pixiu-inspired Zenyatta Mythic skin (Season 15), and future Mythic skins for Widowmaker, Juno, Mercy, Reaper, and D.Va. A second LE SSERAFIM collaboration is also slated for March.
