Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!

The highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has arrived, and the player response has been nothing short of explosive, especially regarding the modding scene. The sheer volume of mods is staggering.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke announced on X (formerly Twitter) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th release. "Modding is pretty big," Vincke stated. This figure was further amplified by Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, who reported that installs have surpassed three million and are still climbing.

Patch 7's impact extends beyond the modding community. It introduced significant new content, including evil endings, improved split-screen functionality, and Larian's own integrated Mod Manager. This built-in tool simplifies mod browsing, installation, and management directly within the game.

The separate Steam-based modding toolkit empowers modders to craft their own narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. It also enables custom script loading, basic debugging, and direct mod publishing.

Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon

PC Gamer highlighted a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) which unlocks a full level editor and reactivates previously restricted editor features. While Larian has been selective about tool access ("We are a game development company, not a tools company," Vincke previously told PC Gamer), this demonstrates the community's ingenuity.

Larian is actively developing cross-platform modding support, though Vincke acknowledges the challenge: "It's not the easiest thing in the world because we have to make it work on consoles and on PC." PC support is prioritized, with console support following after addressing potential issues.

Beyond modding, Patch 7 delivers a refined experience with UI enhancements, new animations, expanded dialogue, and numerous bug fixes and performance improvements.
