Exciting news for fans of Baldur’s Gate 3: the game's final major patch is on the horizon, complete with new features and content. Here's everything you need to know about what's coming in Patch 8 and the future of the franchise.
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) enthusiasts, mark your calendars! The much-anticipated last major update, Patch 8, is set to launch on April 15. Larian Studios made the announcement via a Twitter (X) post on April 11, promising a detailed rundown of the patch during a Twitch Stream hosted by Senior Systems Designer Ross Stephens on April 16 at 1:00 UTC. Be sure to tune in to Larian Studios' Twitch page for all the latest updates. Here's a convenient timetable to help you catch the stream in your local time:
Larian Studios first hinted at this update back in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, teasing fans with a glimpse of what's to come. Patch 8 will introduce 12 new subclasses, a much-requested Photo Mode, and more. Despite being the last major patch, Larian Studios is committed to supporting the modding community, with plans to enhance functionality so players can craft their own stories within the game.
The update promises a rich array of new content, including abilities, animations, VFX, summons, cantrips, and unique voiced dialogue lines for the Oathbreaker Knight. Players can also look forward to written reactivity for Oathbreakers and some homebrewed touches on actions to enrich the role-playing experience. Additionally, the new Photo Mode will offer a variety of options to capture stunning in-game snapshots, including camera settings, lens settings, scene settings, post-processing effects, frames, and stickers.
Following the release of Patch 8, Larian Studios will bid farewell to the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to embark on a new creative journey. At the 2024 Game Developers Conference, Larian Studios Founder and CEO Swen Vicke confirmed that the studio will not pursue any DLC or expansions for Baldur's Gate 3, nor will they develop a sequel.
Vicke stated, "Baldur's Gate will always have a warm spot in our heart. We'll forever be proud of it, but we're not gonna continue in it. We're not gonna make new expansions, which everybody is expecting us to do. We're not gonna make Baldur's Gate 4, which everyone is expecting us to do. We're gonna move on - we're gonna move away from D&D and start making a new thing."
While Larian Studios steps away, the future of the Baldur's Gate series remains bright. Wizards of the Coast, the owner of D&D, is committed to continuing the franchise. In an interview with PC Gamer in April 2024, Eugene Evans, Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy and Licensing at Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, revealed ongoing discussions with potential partners to ensure the series' future.
Evans explained, "So we certainly hope that it's not another 25 years, as it was from Baldur's Gate 2 to 3, before we answer that. But we're going to take our time and find the right partner, the right approach, and the right product that could represent the future of Baldur’s Gate. We take that very, very seriously, as we do with all of our decisions around our portfolio. We don't rush into decisions as to who to partner with on products or what products we should be considering."
Fans can rest assured that while Larian Studios will no longer be involved, the beloved Baldur’s Gate series will continue. Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates and news on the game by checking out our related articles below!
