Baldur's Gate 4 Was Playable But Ultimately Abandoned by Larian

Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed intriguing details about a shelved project. While celebrating their recent successes, CEO Swen Vincke shared insights into the development and subsequent abandonment of a Baldur's Gate 4 prototype.

A Playable Baldur's Gate Sequel Was Abandoned

Larian's Decision to Forgo BG3 DLC and BG4

In a PC Gamer interview, Vincke disclosed that a playable Baldur's Gate 3 sequel was in development before the studio shifted focus. While acknowledging the potential appeal of this "playable" iteration, he cited the team's weariness after extensive work on the D&D IP. The prospect of another multi-year commitment to a similar project led to the decision to pursue original concepts.

Vincke emphasized the team's desire to work on projects that genuinely excited them, a sentiment shared by the developers. This decision, he stated, significantly boosted team morale.

High Morale Fuels Larian's New Ventures

Following their Game Awards 2023 win, Larian opted against developing a BG3 sequel, instead focusing on two undisclosed projects. Vincke described these as their most ambitious endeavors yet. Senior product manager Tom Butler confirmed that the team will complete a final BG3 patch, including mod support and cross-play, before taking a break and commencing work on these new projects.

Given Larian's prior work on the Divinity series, speculation points towards a new entry in that franchise. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 has been hinted at previously, Vincke suggests their next Divinity project will be unexpected. The final major patch for Baldur's Gate 3, including mod support, cross-play, and new endings, is slated for release in Fall 2024.
