The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

by David Jan 25,2025

This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, amassing a legendary library still seeing re-releases. These titles, once Nintendo's rivals, are now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlaySta-Show begin!

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming, floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a looming threat. Expect vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel falls slightly short, the collection is a must-have.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII awakened the Western world to JRPGs, becoming Square Enix's greatest triumph and a key factor in PlayStation's dominance. While the remake exists, the original FFVII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. Though later entries delved into increasingly bizarre territory, the original remains a standout, offering a thrilling, GI Joe-esque adventure. Its engaging gameplay is a testament to its enduring legacy. The PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

Let's explore a niche classic. G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's shoot 'em up franchise to 3D. While the polygons haven't aged flawlessly, their charm remains. The vibrant colors, unique enemy capture mechanic, and inventive boss designs deliver a compelling shooter experience.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

To avoid an all-Square Enix list, I'll limit it to this and FFVII. Chrono Cross, tasked with following Chrono Trigger, inevitably falls short of its predecessor's acclaim. However, independent of that comparison, it's a cleverly designed, visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit underdeveloped, cast and one of the best video game soundtracks ever.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I appreciate most Mega Man games, nostalgia clouds my judgment. For non-fans, I recommend only Mega Man X and Mega Man X4. X4 stands out for its superior design and balance, a brief period of excellence before the series faltered. Purchase the Legacy Collection for a comprehensive experience.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Many PlayStation first-party titles weren't actually owned by Sony. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with engaging action. The creator's Ghosts ‘n Goblins background hints at the game's deceptively challenging nature. A hidden gem worth rediscovering.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Developed by many Lunar creators, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure, contrasting the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs of the time. Its satisfying combat system builds upon Game Arts' Lunar series. The collection includes another solid title.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft, a PlayStation icon, starred in five adventures. While quality varied, the original stands out with its focus on tomb raiding over action. This remastered collection allows you to judge for yourself.

moon ($18.99)

Let's conclude with an obscure title. Initially Japan-only, moon deconstructs the RPG genre, often described as an "anti-RPG." It functions more as an adventure game, possessing a unique, almost "punk" aesthetic. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and underlying message are noteworthy.

This concludes the list. What are your favorite PlayStation 1 games on Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments! Thank you for following this series.
